UPI has become part of everyday life for millions of people in India. Paying a shop, splitting a bill or sending money to family can take just a few taps. That convenience also means a small mistake can move quickly.

Start with the basic rule

Never share a UPI PIN, OTP, card PIN or remote-access code with anyone. A person receiving money does not need your UPI PIN. If a screen asks for the PIN, read it carefully: you may be approving a payment rather than receiving one.

Check the name before paying

Before sending money, verify the displayed recipient name and the amount. This takes only a few seconds and can prevent a payment going to the wrong person. Be extra careful when a QR code arrives through a message or social post.

Keep apps updated

Use official app stores and keep your payment app and phone software updated. Updates can include security fixes. Avoid installing unknown APK files sent by strangers, even when the message looks like it comes from a delivery company or bank.

Use alerts as a second check

Turn on payment notifications. If you see a transaction you do not recognise, contact your bank or payment app through its official support channel. Do not use phone numbers from random search results or forwarded messages.

Pause when pressure appears

Scammers often create urgency: a limited-time refund, a blocked account or a prize that must be claimed immediately. A short pause gives you time to verify the request through an official website or app.

A simple routine

  • Read every UPI screen before entering a PIN.
  • Verify the recipient name and amount.
  • Never install unknown apps for support.
  • Use a screen lock and app lock.
  • Report suspicious activity quickly through official channels.

These habits cannot remove every risk, but they make common mistakes far less likely.
